Funeral Program Major General Victor Joseph Jr

Major General Victor Joseph Hugo Jr was a warrior, a soldier, my mentor, and most of all… my friend.  It was his belief in me and the work I was doing that convinced him to introduce me to the then “Colonel of the Regiment” MG Donald  C. Hilbert, USA (RET.).  That meeting expanded my mission to include working and walking among the US Army’s oldest infantry regiment – the 3d infantry regiment – “The Old Guard” and much more, such as a published author!  Thank you, General Hugo!

General Hugo, a West Point graduate, class of 1954, passed away at the age of 89 on 11 MAY 2020. Although it was a sad day for anyone who knew Vic Hugo, the General would have said,

“Don’t be sad because I’m gone, instead, smile because I was here.”

NATIONAL VETERANS DAY OBSERVANCE – “Recognition and commemoration of the Veterans who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Uniform Services”

WASHINGTON – The nation’s 67th Veterans Day Observance to honor the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Uniform Services during war and peacetime will be live-streamed at https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/25131  beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 11 from Arlington National Cemetery.

The U.S. Army Military District of Washington will conduct a Presidential Armed Forces Full Honor Wreath-Laying Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The Honorable Robert Wilkie, United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs, will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in recognition and commemoration of the Veterans who have served in the U.S. Uniformed Services.

The ceremony hosted by Maj. Gen. Omar J. Jones, commanding general, Joint Task Force – National Capital Region and U.S. Army Military District of Washington will be modified from the standard ceremony to practice physical distancing and to ensure the safety of all participants.

At the time of this release, attendance of the National Veterans Day Observance is limited to official ceremony participants. The public is encouraged to view the ceremony via the live-stream link: https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/25131.

Arlington National Cemetery will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Memorial Amphitheater and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are currently closed to the public. All visitors are to follow social distancing requirements and face-covering policy. Anyone not having face coverings in their possession at cemetery entry points will not be granted access to the cemetery.

The Radio Beacon of Flight at College Park MD

The Radio Beacon Improves Aviation

The First military aviation flights were on Fort Myer, Virginia…
But College Park, Maryland is where aviation continued. It was first in 1909 when the US Army Signal Corps leased the acreage for the Wright Brothers to train the first military pilots.  It would also be where Harold “Hap” Arnold first learned to fly.   The US Army Signal Corps would only use the acres until 1912.   Though other companies would launch their business operations along the edge of the acres.  Among them were Curtiss-Wright and Rex Smith Aeroplane Company.

It would be several years later.  1927 in fact when aviation really began to take off.   As more utility of this new form of travel/transportation presented itself, such as delivering the US Mail. A need to provide some navigation was set up at College Park, Maryland.

The Radio Beacon Show the Way

george k burgessThe first radio beacon was inaugurated alongside the airfield.  A photograph above showing Dr. George K. Burgess, Director of the United States Bureau of Standards, and the aircraft radio beacon at College Park, Maryland, designed for guiding airplanes by radio. This is the first radio beacon for use of civil aviation and this station is but a forerunner of 40 other similar installations to be established at 200-mile intervals along the 8,234 miles of civil airways.
The towers with a radio beacon would herald new advances in the aviation industry as additional applications of this technology would revolutionize the way the world worked, traveled, and fought.

Soldiers of  3d Infantry Regiment – The Old Guard – who are garrisoned at Fort Myer, had the sacred duty of rendering final honors for US Army Staff Sgt. Ronald J. Shurer II in Arlington National Cemetery. Shurer was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions with the 3rd Special Forces Group during the Battle of Shok Valley in Afghanistan. He was part of a team sent to capture or kill several high-value members of the Hezb-e Islami al Gulbadin militant group.

STAFF SERGEANT RONALD J. SHURER II, the UNITED STATES ARMY

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Staff Sergeant Ronald J. Shurer II distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty on April 6, 2008, while serving as a Senior Medical Sergeant, Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3336, Special Operations Task Force-33, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Staff Sergeant Shurer was part of an assault element inserted by helicopter into a location in Afghanistan. As the assault element moved up a near-vertical mountain toward its objective, it was engaged by a fierce enemy machine gun, sniper, and rocket-propelled grenade fire. The lead portion of the assault element, which included the ground commander, sustained several casualties and became pinned down on the mountainside. Staff Sergeant Shurer and the rest of the trailing portion of the assault element were likewise engaged by the enemy machine gun, sniper, and rocket-propelled grenade fire. As the attack intensified, Staff Sergeant Shurer braved enemy fire to move to an injured Soldier and treat his wounds. Having stabilized the injured Soldier, Staff Sergeant Shurer then learned of the casualties among the lead element. Staff Sergeant Shurer fought his way up the mountainside, under intense enemy fire, to the lead element’s location. Upon reaching the lead element, he treated and stabilized two more Soldiers. Finishing those lifesaving efforts, Staff Sergeant Shurer noticed two additional severely wounded Soldiers under intense enemy fire. The bullet that had wounded one of these Soldiers had also impacted Staff Sergeant Shurer’s helmet. With complete disregard for his own life, Staff Sergeant Shurer again moved through enemy fire to treat and stabilize one Soldier’s severely wounded arm. Shortly thereafter, Staff Sergeant Shurer continued to brave withering enemy fire to get to the other Soldier’s location in order to treat his lower leg, which had been almost completely severed by a high-caliber sniper round. After treating the Soldier, Staff Sergeant Shurer began to evacuate the wounded; carrying and lowering them down the sheer mountainside. While moving down the mountain, Staff Sergeant Shurer used his own body to shield the wounded from enemy fire and debris caused by danger-close airstrikes. Reaching the base of the mountain, Staff Sergeant Shurer set up a casualty collection point and continued to treat the wounded. With the arrival of the medical evacuation helicopter, Staff Sergeant Shurer, again under enemy fire, helped load the wounded into the helicopter. Having ensured the safety of the wounded, Staff Sergeant Shurer then regained control of his commando squad and rejoined the fight. He continued to lead his troops and emplace security elements until it was time to move to the evacuation landing zone for the helicopter. Staff Sergeant Shurer’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan, Special Operations Command Central, and the United States Army.

The tomb guards are soldiers of the United States Army. The first military guards were troopers from the 3rd Cavalry, “Brave Rifles”, who were posted nearby on Fort Myer. Since April 6, 1948, (known then as “Army Day“), when the regiment was reactivated, it has been guarded by soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard”. The Old Guard is also posted to Fort Myer, Virginia, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery.
