Yarborough - General Y\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">William P. Yarborough<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>LTG William P. Yarborough, \u00a0USA (Ret.) \u00a0passed on 06 December 2005 \u00a0after a life that enriched the US Army and the United States of America \u2013<\/p>\n<h2>Class of 1936 \u2013 West Point<\/h2>\n<p>From the US Military Academy, \u00a0he went on to be one of the driving forces in the airborne operations of the US Army. \u00a0 He designed all three versions of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parachutist_Badge_(United_States)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">parachutist badge<\/a>\u00a0(the first batch of several hundred were made from silver by the firm of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baileybanksandbiddle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bailey, Banks, and Biddle<\/a>\u00a0 Then a captain, Yarborough\u00a0was responsible for the flash that appears behind the badge (giving the entire US Army the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/john-michael.net\/index.php\/2009\/02\/19\/a-flash-of-color-special-forces-style\/\">flash of color<\/a>\u00a0concept). Later he planned the first drop into North Africa \u2013 his book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3oWQkX2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cBail Out Over North Africa\u201d<\/a>\u00a0provided the details of that event\u2026 later during WW II William P Yarborough, upon his promotion to colonel\u00a0was in command of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/509th_Infantry_Regiment_(United_States)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">509th PIR Airborne<\/a>. \u00a0 He also briefly commanded the 473d infantry regiment and during that time designed the distinctive unit insignia (DUI) for the regiment.<\/p>\n<h2>Father of the Modern Green Berets<\/h2>\n<p>Later in his career, his visionary view saw the future need of the US Army Special Forces. \u00a0He and his West Point classmate MG\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chester_Victor_Clifton,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chester V Clifton, Jr.<\/a>\u00a0orchestrated the pivotal milestone visit to Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 12 October 1961 which exposed President John F. Kennedy to the Special Forces securing the funding to turn them into what they are today. \u00a0That visit also secured the Presidential approval of the Special Forces to wear the green beret, the only Presidential approved headgear in the US military. \u00a0A bust of the general is on display at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asomf.org\/\">Airborne &amp; Special Operations Museum<\/a>\u00a0in downtown Fayetteville North Carolina. \u00a0The US Army Special Forces honored General William P Yarborough in 2002 when they began providing each graduate of the Q course the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadowspear.com\/vb\/threads\/the-yarborough-knife-symbol-of-a-legacy.5852\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yarborough Knife<\/a>. \u00a0In 2012 with the generous donation by Ross Perot, a statue of the commemoration of the 1961 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/76701\/SWCS_to_dedicate_Kennedy_Yarborough_statue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kennedy \u2013 Yarborough meeting<\/a>\u00a0was placed in front of the JFK Warfare School on Fort Bragg North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-875 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/john-michael.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/JFK-WPY-STATUE-253x300.jpg\" alt=\"LTG William P. In the course of their meeting, the President asked Brigadier General William P. Yarborough, \u201cThose are nice. How do you like the Green Beret?&#8221; General Yarborough replied, &#8220;They&#8217;re fine, Sir.
