Operation Dragoon<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>At the Rhone American Cemetery north of St. Tropez, in the little city of Draguignan, above all the graves, a stone wall is inscribed:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><em><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>&#8220;We who lie here died that future generations might live in peace.&#8221; <\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In all, 250,000 Allied soldiers stormed France&#8217;s Mediterranean shores on Aug. 15, 1944, just 70 days after the D-Day landings at Normandy, catching German troops in a pincer so tight that Hitler muttered to aides, &#8220;This is the darkest day of my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>You can read more about it at this Wikipedia entry about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Dragoon\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Operation Dragoon<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Recently at Arlington National Cemetery a gathering of WW II veterans, their families and friends occurred to remember that &#8220;other&#8221; invasion of France. Many call it the &#8220;Forgotten Other D-Day.&#8221; But here 65 years later, they gathered to remember and be remembered.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370224273730555026\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 320px; cursor: hand; height: 213px; text-align: center;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_N4M8uWx2gHI\/SobehjfjzJI\/AAAAAAAAAOo\/OPnR-JBm3hs\/s320\/Dragoon-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The invasion involved significant coordination of US forces represented by the 3d, 36th, and 45th Infantry Divisions, the 509th &amp; 551st Parachute Infantry Regiments, the 550th Airborne Infantry Battalion (gliders), the bi-national troops of the 1st Special Services Forces, and even the OSS.
