The Radio Beacon Improves Aviation<\/h2>\n

The First military aviation flights were on\u00a0Fort Myer, Virginia<\/a>\u2026<\/div>\n
But\u00a0College Park, Maryland<\/a>\u00a0is where aviation continued. It was first in 1909 when the US Army Signal Corps leased the acreage for the Wright Brothers to train the first military pilots. \u00a0It would also be where Harold \u201cHap\u201d Arnold first learned to fly. \u00a0 The US Army Signal Corps<\/a> would only use the acres until 1912. \u00a0 Though other companies would launch their business operations along the edge of the acres. \u00a0Among them were Curtiss-Wright and\u00a0Rex Smith Aeroplane Company<\/a>.<\/div>\n

It would be several years later. \u00a01927 in fact when aviation really began to take off. \u00a0 As more utility of this new form of travel\/transportation presented itself, such as delivering the US Mail. A need to provide some navigation was\u00a0set up\u00a0at College Park, Maryland.<\/div>\n

The Radio Beacon Show the Way<\/h2>\n

\"georgeThe first radio beacon was inaugurated alongside the airfield. \u00a0A photograph above showing Dr. George K. Burgess, Director of the United States Bureau of Standards, and the aircraft radio beacon at College Park, Maryland, designed for guiding airplanes by radio. This is the first radio beacon for use of civil aviation and this station is but a forerunner of 40 other similar installations to be established at 200-mile intervals along the 8,234 miles of civil airways.<\/div>\n
