{"id":847,"date":"2009-02-19T23:29:27","date_gmt":"2009-02-20T04:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/john-michael.net\/?p=847"},"modified":"2020-12-15T20:57:46","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T01:57:46","slug":"a-flash-of-color-special-forces-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/john-michael.net\/index.php\/2009\/02\/19\/a-flash-of-color-special-forces-style\/","title":{"rendered":"A FLASH of Color &#8211; Special Forces Style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\namzn_assoc_placement = \"adunit0\";\namzn_assoc_search_bar = \"true\";\namzn_assoc_tracking_id = \"johnmichael0d-20\";\namzn_assoc_ad_mode = \"manual\";\namzn_assoc_ad_type = \"smart\";\namzn_assoc_marketplace = \"amazon\";\namzn_assoc_region = \"US\";\namzn_assoc_title = \"My Amazon Picks\";\namzn_assoc_linkid = \"7c64f681ba3ccdc9d218c1a785e84ecb\";\namzn_assoc_asins = \"0671639234,1523365145,1586483528,0813144515\";\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script src=\"\/\/z-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/onejs?MarketPlace=US\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"left\">On the Way to Fort Bragg<\/h2>\n<p align=\"left\">A few weeks ago, I had a trip to Fort Bragg to witness and record the induction of three retired Special Forces soldiers as &#8220;a distinguished member of the Regiment.&#8221; While there, I met and spent some time with the Director\/Curator of the JFK Warfare Museum and she furthered my knowledge about the origins of the <strong><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">Flashes<\/span><\/strong> that are used behind the insignia of rank, certain badges, or the regiment.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I had earlier learned that LTG William P. Yarborough when confronted with the comment by his commander that the Parachutist Badge which he designed and presented to his commander that &#8220;&#8230; they&#8217;re too damn small!&#8221; Then Captain Yarborough, with a spark of creative genius used pieces of colored felt that were put behind the badge to make it appear bigger. That same concept was applied to the Special Forces Groups Flashes.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Originally, a consideration was a &#8220;rosette&#8221; similar to the ones awarded to recipients of the Purple Heart shown below (now discontinued)<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299557308623961954\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 50px; cursor: hand; height: 57px; text-align: center;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_N4M8uWx2gHI\/SYvPSz9bP2I\/AAAAAAAAABc\/-svz3Qq8TBM\/s320\/Purple_heart_rosette.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>or a Medal of Honor recipient &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299557187400818626\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 49px; cursor: hand; height: 55px; text-align: center;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_N4M8uWx2gHI\/SYvPLwXk38I\/AAAAAAAAABU\/U94EbdArd2g\/s320\/Medal_of_honor_rosette.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many of the colonial troops wore a rosette in their tricorn hats.<br \/>\nInstead of the rosette, a small piece of colored material to provide &#8220;A flash of color&#8230;&#8221;
